How long does COVID-19 last on surfaces?

According to the World Health Organisation, It is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days.

A new study, which has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, specifically examined the longevity of Covid-19.

This study looked at ten different experimental conditions involving two viruses, SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes Covid-19) and SARS-CoV- 1 (the virus that caused SARS) in aerosols – to reproduce coughing – plastic, stainless steel, copper, and cardboard.

The findings suggested that the virus that causes Covid-19 could survive:

  • In aerosols for up to three hours
  • On cardboard for up to 24 hours
  • On plastic and stainless-steel surfaces for up to three days.

The authors specifically noted that SARS-CoV-2 can remain “viable and infectious” on surfaces for days. This echoed many of the findings the researchers had with SARS-CoV-1.Unfortunately, the study did not look at how long the virus could survive on clothing and other surfaces.

Deep cleaning of surfaces, regular hand washing, closing the toilet lid when flushing are some examples of preventing the spread of the virus on surfaces. Decontamination fogging is shown to be an effective method to produce a deep clean surfaces and kills the virus, protecting the surface for up to 3 days. It’s Springtime

Your free cooling is coming to an end for this period with your chillers now becoming enabled more frequently and the use of the cooling function of your AC units. There is no need to reduce the set points in the areas and where local control is provided for AC units it is recommended that the lockable band is implemented to prevent disputes in temperatures with employees.

There are a few items that you can check to ensure your system is operating efficiently. Check your weather compensation settings for your variable temperature circuits. Typical settings for the weather compensator working on a delta T of 80/60 is 0/20 at max 80 and min 20, this means that when your outside air temperature is reading 0 Deg C the heat source will provide 80 Degrees Celsius to the circuit and if the outdoor sensor reads 20 Degrees Celsius the circuit will be provided with 20 Degrees Celsius rendering the circuit inactive. Contact your account manger if you have any queries on the operation of your system.
